What the ecommerce fee calculator does

The price on the product page is not the money that lands in your bank account. Between the two sit payment processing fees, platform or marketplace commissions, shipping you did not fully charge for and the orders that come back as refunds. This calculator lays all of that out for a single order and for 100 orders so the small leaks become visible.

Enter the order value, your cost of goods, what shipping costs you and what you charge the customer for it, then pick a payment gateway. Stripe and PayPal presets use their standard published rates, or you can enter a custom percentage and fixed fee for any other processor or a negotiated rate. Add a marketplace commission if you sell through a platform and your typical refund rate, and the calculator returns total fees, net profit and your effective margin on the order value.

How to use it

  1. Enter a typical order value and the cost of the goods in that order.
  2. Enter the shipping you pay the carrier and the shipping you charge the customer, if any.
  3. Choose your gateway or enter custom rates, then add any platform commission.
  4. Set your refund rate as a percentage of orders and read the per-order and per-100-orders breakdown.

The sentence beneath the results names your single biggest fee and suggests what usually helps, whether that is raising the average order value, moving repeat customers to your own store or fixing product pages to cut returns.

Why it matters

Fixed per-transaction fees hurt small orders far more than large ones. A 30 cent fee is half a percent of a 60 dollar order but 3 percent of a 10 dollar order. Seeing the numbers side by side shows why free shipping thresholds, bundles and minimum order values are so common in profitable stores.

Marketplace commissions of 10 to 15 percent are often the largest single line. They buy you traffic, but for customers who already know you, selling through your own store keeps most of that money. If you are weighing that move, our ecommerce website service and the profit margin calculator are good next steps.

  • Compare gateways on your real order size, not a headline rate.
  • See how refunds and uncovered shipping quietly erode margin.
  • Decide whether a marketplace commission is worth the traffic it brings.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are the Stripe and PayPal rates accurate?
The presets use the standard published domestic card rates for online payments. Your actual rate can differ by country, card type, currency conversion or a negotiated agreement, so use the custom option if you know your exact terms.
How does the refund rate affect profit?
On a refunded order the customer gets their money back and you usually get the goods back, but the gateway fee and outbound shipping are gone. The calculator spreads that expected loss across all orders so your average profit per order is realistic.
What should I enter for the platform fee?
The percentage commission a marketplace or hosted platform takes on each sale. Leave it at zero if you sell on your own WooCommerce or custom store and only pay the payment gateway.
Why is shipping charged to the customer added to the gross amount?
Because gateways charge their percentage on the full amount collected, including shipping. Charging for shipping raises your gateway fee slightly, which the calculator accounts for.
Is anything I enter stored?
No. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
