What the DNS lookup does

DNS is the address book of the internet, and this tool reads that address book for any hostname you enter. It fetches the records that control how a domain behaves: A and AAAA map the name to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, MX defines where email is delivered, NS lists the authoritative name servers, TXT holds verification and policy strings like SPF and DKIM, CNAME shows aliases that point one name at another, and CAA declares which certificate authorities may issue SSL certificates for the domain.

What is the difference between an A record and a CNAME?
An A record points a name directly to an IP address, while a CNAME points one name at another name as an alias. You cannot use a CNAME at the root of a domain.
